My Background and Focus
Daniel’s practice includes all spheres of intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, and industrial designs. Daniel’s primary focus is on drafting and prosecuting patents for global companies, start-ups, and individual inventors. Daniel also provides legal opinions with respect to freedom to operate, patentability, and infringement.
Daniel also drafts patent, trademark, and other intellectual property licenses, non-disclosure agreements, assignment of rights documents, software licenses, distribution agreements, master service agreements, franchise agreements, letters of intent, term sheets and intellectual property sales agreements.
Daniel’s litigation practice has a proven track record before the Federal Court of Canada, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal of Ontario.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, Daniel practiced for almost 20 years as a licensed Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario. Daniel’s engineering practice included designing telephony, mobile devices, military, system interconnect, storage, and telecommunication integrated circuits (ICs) in customer-own tooling (COT) and also application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) flows. He is fluent in Verilog and VHDL hardware description languages and is also fluent in several scripting languages. In addition, he has designed several register transfer level (RTL) IC blocks and several integrated circuit analog blocks. Daniel’s engineering practice also included integrated circuit physical design comprising floor planning, synthesis, placement, routing, and power grid design. Daniel also regularly performed static timing analysis (STA), on-chip variation (OCV), cross-talk, design rule checking (DRC), and layout-versus-schematic (LVS) checks.
Additionally, Daniel incorporated and managed his own business, where he developed a business plan, worked with lenders to secure financing, and worked with accountants and business lawyers to structure and manage his corporation.
Daniel is also a Cornell University Fellow of Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
Outside of work, he enjoys competitive car racing, kickboxing, and travelling.
