MBM Intellectual Property Law is looking for a Registered Canadian Patent Agent to join our collaborative, growing team and help clients protect innovations in Canada and around the world.

The Opportunity

• Meeting with inventors to identify their invention’s points of novelty
• Drafting foreign and domestic patent applications to articulate the above in writing
• Responding to both foreign and domestic Office Actions
• Monitoring deadlines/activities related to client IP portfolios
• Fostering and maintaining positive client and colleague relationships
• Mentoring, training, and supporting the development of junior patent agents in training
• Supporting team priorities and client needs as they arise

What You Will Bring

• A Class 1 license with the CPATA as a Registered Canadian Patent Agent (having passed the USPTO Patent Bar would also be an asset)
• 8+ years of experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in both Canadian and foreign jurisdictions
• An advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics and/or Physics; a J.D. or other applicable law degree is not required
• An understanding of and experience with AI, cloud computing and telecommunications technologies
• The ability to meet and manage deadlines
• The ability to analyze complex problems and devise creative solutions
• Excellent communication skills, especially in writing
• Bilingualism in French and English would be an asset

Compensation and Hiring Transparency

Compensation will be competitive and aligned with the successful candidate’s experience, qualifications, and scope of responsibility. Salary range: $130,000 to $175,000. In addition to salary, employees are supported through ongoing learning opportunities, mentorship, and opportunities for career development within the firm.

The Opportunity

• Prepare, file, prosecute, and manage Canadian trademark applications before CIPO.
• Advise clients on trademark clearance, filing, prosecution, portfolio management, renewals, and brand protection strategy.
• Draft clear, persuasive responses to Examiner’s Reports and communicate recommendations to clients.
• Coordinate with clients, foreign associates, and agents on Canadian and international trademark matters.
• Support opposition, expungement, and contentious trademark matters in collaboration with senior agents and lawyers.
• Manage deadlines, maintain accurate portfolio records, and help ensure exceptional client service.
• Build strong client relationships by providing practical, business-minded advice.
• Contribute to mentoring, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement within the trademark team.

What You Bring

• Registration as a Canadian Trademark Agent in good standing.

• Approximately 5+ years of trademark prosecution and portfolio management experience.

• Strong working knowledge of CIPO practices, procedures, and trademark prosecution strategy.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate legal and technical issues into practical client advice.

• Strong organizational skills and confidence managing deadlines, priorities, and multiple active matters.

• A collaborative, service-minded approach and sound business judgment.

• Post-secondary education; a legal degree or equivalent qualification is an asset.

• Experience with U.S. or foreign trademark matters is an asset.

• Bilingualism in English and French is an asset.
