My Background and Focus

After finishing the Applied Business Technology program at Capilano University, I decided to leave my retail management job to pursue a career that would enable me to find a better work/life balance as a single mother. So, I took a bold step and joined MBM in 2011. Working in retail management taught me some invaluable skills in how to manage customers and staff, which was a great foundation for my new role at MBM.

When I first started at MBM, I managed reception and docketing for MBM’s Vancouver office, which was a great way to get to know the firm and the people. Through the years, my responsibilities have expanded considerably. In addition, I now handle new client phone inquiries, client and matter file opening on all MBM systems, and general coordination of office operations and administrative processes. With some people working remotely and some returning to business travel, I have embraced the new challenge of coordinating proper information flow on all MBM systems to ensure everyone gets the right information in a timely fashion and no deadlines are missed. Office communication has become more complex these days and, as a result, requires more attention to detail, and I am very focused on finding ways to ease the process for staff and clients.

In addition, I also manage all IT issues in the Vancouver office and coordinate with the Ottawa headquarters office for any inter-office administrative processes. The bottom line is I’m the go-to person if anyone needs anything. I love being the internal office FIXER, the person everyone comes to for help, from office supply questions to personal advice and everything in between. I love helping new staff, training them, being their sounding board, and encouraging them to find their way within MBM and become successful. But, if you were to ask me what my favourite task is, I’d have to say being the person who always makes sure everyone gets a birthday card and that the whole office signs it. I am the mama bear of this team, and I love my role!

My Approach

I don’t think I have a specific approach to how I handle my job at MBM because I consider what I do a part of who I am. I really love being the voice and the face of MBM and having the opportunity to greet people and welcome them to our firm. I love talking to new clients, learning about their businesses, and making sure they are directed to the right person to help them with their IP needs. I am excited by what we do at MBM, and I like to share that excitement with anyone who calls our office!

What my clients/co-workers say about me

quote mark

Kate is the greeting face of MBM’s Vancouver office. She is always warm and friendly to clients and staff, reliable, and always willing to help. She knows the in’s and out’s of all MBM’s administrative procedures and, as a result, is the first stop for onboarding new clients and ensuring the correctness and integrity of our files. She is an invaluable member of the team.

My life outside of work

I am privileged to live in the beautiful, wooded area of Vancouver on the West Coast of Canada, so my favourite activity is my nightly after-dinner nature walks. There are so many different nature trails that I almost never walk the same path; it’s truly magical. Sometimes, I walk with my son, and we use this time to catch up. It’s a perfect way to unwind at the end of the day and get in my steps!

Gardening is also one of my passions, so I make sure my garden is filled with the most beautiful flowers, and I put a lot of effort and attention into decorating my outdoor space so that when I sit in my favourite spot on my deck, I feel like I’m in my own personal oasis.

When I’m not relaxing on my deck, you can find me in the middle of some craft project. The latest is painting a tile that will be added to a national project to be displayed somewhere in Canada – I have no idea where yet, so I’m looking forward to the surprise!
